In Singapore, Pneumonia is the 2nd leading cause of death and the 5th most common condition to be hospitalised for.
Pneumocccal disease is an infection caused by the Streptococcus pneumonia (pneumococcus) bacterium and can affect the entire body including important organs like the brain, bloodstream and lungs.
Anyone can be at risk of this disease but some people are at greater risk for the disease than others.
You are at increased risk if you are/have:
- aged 65 years and above
- aged 2 years to 64 years old with chronic lung diseases like asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
- Heart disease
- Diabetes
- Smoking
- Kidney / Liver disease
- HIV / AIDS
Government allows the use of Medisave up to $500 a year for this vaccination if you are:
- aged 65 years and above (2 doses, one year apart)
- or aged 2 to 64 years old with diabetes, asthma, or previous heart conditions (1 dose)
